Missed-Call Text-Back for Drywall Contractors
Every missed call auto-texted in under 60 seconds — even when you're on stilts, covered in mud, or three coats deep on a finish job. Why drywall shops miss so many calls, the exact trade-specific scripts, and the 10DLC basics.

You're on stilts, trowel in one hand and a pan of mud in the other, when your phone buzzes in your pocket. There's no stopping mid-coat — the mud waits for nobody. Two hours later you wipe your hands and call back. Straight to their voicemail. They hired the other drywall guy an hour ago. You paid for that lead with your ads and your reviews, and you handed it away because your hands were full.
Why drywall shops miss so many calls
Drywall work is uniquely hostile to answering a phone. Sanding runs loud enough to drown a ringtone. Your hands are covered in joint compound and you can't touch a screen. You're on stilts or a ladder, or you're in a basement with no signal, or you're racing a finish coat before it sets. A drywall crew can easily go four hours without a clean chance to check the phone — and that's during business hours. Evenings are worse: homeowners research drywall contractors after work, compare three companies, and call all three. The first one who engages gets the estimate. The other two get voicemail.
The uncomfortable part: a big share of drywall work is time-sensitive. The homeowner with a hole in the ceiling wants it patched this week. The general contractor needs a hang-and-finish crew on a remodel with a hard deadline. The landlord needs the unit patched by Friday for a new tenant. Slow responders don't just lose the job — they never even enter the conversation.
The math that should bother you
of inbound calls to home-service businesses go unanswered (Invoca call-analytics research) — and 47% of those unanswered calls are leads, not wrong numbers.
of unanswered calls are leads that convert — when someone actually follows up (Invoca call-analytics research).
more likely to qualify a lead when you respond within 5 minutes instead of 30 (MIT Lead Response Management Study, cited in HBR 2011). A text-back makes "within 5 minutes" automatic.
Your own version: (missed calls per week) × (your average drywall job value) = revenue that texted a competitor instead of you.
How missed-call text-back works for a drywall crew
The flow, no tech background needed:
- Missed call. A customer calls your business number while you're mid-coat, on stilts, or after hours.
- Auto-text within a minute. They get a text — daytime callers get one version, nights and weekends get another.
- They reply by text. The conversation lands in one inbox you check between jobs — phone app, computer, or both. You also get an instant notification that a missed call happened, so nothing sits until tomorrow.
- You book the estimate. Between coats, at lunch, or after the job, you reply and schedule the walkthrough. The caller never sat through voicemail.
Pick your tool lane
Three honest options, three price points:
- GoHighLevel — $97/mo (Starter). Missed-call text-back is a built-in workflow, plus estimate follow-up and review requests in the same tool. The one-tool route for shops that want everything in one place.
- CallRail — from $55/mo ($50 on annual). The cheapest tool with native missed-call text-back, and you get call tracking as a bonus — useful for knowing which ads actually ring the phone.
- Check what you own first. Jobber (Connect $139/mo+) and Housecall Pro (Essentials $189/mo+) offer two-way SMS on higher tiers for manual replies, but neither does missed-call text-back natively on core plans — pair with CallRail rather than paying for a second texting system.
The honest call on free: there is no reliable free version. Google Voice and carrier voicemail cannot auto-text missed callers. Don't burn a weekend trying.
10DLC basics: register before you text
US carriers require 10DLC business-texting registration before a business can text from a standard 10-digit number. (10DLC is the carriers' registration system for business texting, designed to cut spam.) Every tool above walks you through it:
- Time: approval takes 1–7 days. Budget the wait into your week.
- Cost: usually ~$15–$20 in one-time carrier/campaign fees — part of the setup cost, not a surprise.
- The critical rule: do not turn texting on until approval comes through. Early texts get filtered as spam and you'll think the system is broken.
- Opt-out language: your first automated text must include it ("Reply STOP to opt out").
- New since June 2026 (per Twilio's June 30, 2026 requirement): registration hard-fails without public privacy-policy and terms pages on your website — publish both first.
The drywall calls this saves
These four callers show up constantly in drywall shops. Every one of them calls more than one contractor:
1. The plumber's hole. A homeowner has a ceiling cut open after a pipe repair. They want a patch plus a texture match, this week. They're calling three drywall companies off Google tonight. The text-back engages them in 60 seconds; the callback-tomorrow shop never gets a shot.
2. The GC on a deadline. A remodeler needs a hang-and-finish crew for a whole house starting next week. GCs call three crews and hire the first one who responds with a walkthrough time. Your auto-text buys you the evening to reply with a real slot.
3. The landlord turnover. A property owner needs four rooms patched by Friday for a new tenant. Small job, but landlords are repeat customers — win the first turnover and you get every turnover. The text thread keeps you in front of them while you're finishing today's job.
4. The texture-match skeptic. A homeowner was burned by a bad patch once and calls to ask if you can actually match their orange-peel or knockdown. The text opens a conversation where you explain your process and send photos of past matches — a conversation voicemail never starts.
The scripts (copy-paste ready)
Swap in your own business name — the sample names below are stand-ins to get you started. Keep the opt-out line on the first automated text.
Missed-call text — business hours
Missed-call text — after hours
Voicemail greeting (record this — keep it under 20 seconds)
The goal of the first text is the conversation, not the quote. Never put a price in the text-back — use the thread to book the walkthrough, then price it in person.
One sender per message type
Missed-call text-back is one of several texts your shop sends. Assign exactly one tool to each message type and switch the others off, or customers get double texts:
- Missed-call text-back: your chosen tool above — and only that tool.
- Appointment confirmations and reminders: your field-service software or the same tool — never both.
- Estimate follow-ups: one tool. If the text-back tool handles it, turn off the field-service software's version.
- Review requests: one tool, sent once per finished job.
Before going live, test every automation with your own cell phone. Two tools sending the same reminder looks broken and annoys the exact customers you're trying to impress.
Three mistakes drywall owners make with this
- Letting the crew's personal cells be the business line. If calls ring whoever's free, no automation can fire. Route the business number through the tool first — personal phones stay personal.
- Skipping the after-hours version. Drywall "emergencies" are rare, but evening shoppers are not. A generic "we're closed, call tomorrow" loses to the shop that texts back tonight. The after-hours script exists for exactly this.
- Quoting in the first text. Drywall pricing depends on the patch size, texture, access, and paint. A number fired off by text either scares them off or locks you into a bad price. Book the walkthrough in the thread; price it in person.
