The "emergency that wasn't" is plumbing's signature no-show — and it's the most preventable kind there is.

For plumbing, the confirmation text isn't "just confirming!" — it's a direct question with an easy out. Sent the evening before for morning appointments, or 2–3 hours before for same-day bookings:
Hi [First Name], this is [Business Name] — checking in on your [plumbing issue] appointment [tomorrow at 8am / today at 2pm]. Is the issue still happening? Reply YES to confirm we're still needed, or reply CANCEL and we'll free up the slot — no charge, no hard feelings. Thanks!
"No charge, no hard feelings" is the load-bearing phrase. The customer who fixed it themselves is embarrassed — you're removing the social cost of canceling. Every CANCEL reply is a slot you can refill instead of a dead hour you discover at the door.
For emergency slots specifically, add the triage line to the same text:
Hi [First Name], [Business Name] here — confirming your emergency visit [today at 8am] for [issue]. Quick check: is water still actively running or leaking? Reply YES to confirm, or CANCEL if it's resolved — no charge either way.
The best no-show system starts at booking. Train whoever takes the call (or build it into the booking text flow) to ask three questions:
Write these into your booking setup guide (standard operating procedure) — the 90 seconds they take saves the 60-minute dead roll.
Emergency and same-day slots get a second confirmation the morning of — 60–90 minutes before the window:
Good morning [First Name], this is [Your Name] with [Business Name] — our tech is heading your way for [issue] between [window]. Please reply YES to confirm someone's home, or call [number] if plans changed.
The "someone's home" framing matters for plumbing — half of plumbing no-shows are actually "I had to leave for work and forgot." The text forces the realization before the tech is in the driveway.
When the tech marks a no-show in your field-service software (field service management — your scheduling system), fire the recovery text within 30 minutes — while the embarrassment is fresh and the goodwill window is open:
Hi [First Name], this is [Business Name] — our tech stopped by for your [issue] visit but couldn't reach anyone. Totally understand, things come up! Did the issue resolve itself, or do you still need us? Just reply and we'll get you rescheduled.
"Did the issue resolve itself" is doing the diagnostic work for you — the reply tells you whether this was a self-resolution (move to reactivation later) or a scheduling failure (rebook now). Then log the no-show in your CRM (customer relationship management — your customer database): two no-shows = future bookings require a live phone confirmation, not just a text.
Example: 8 jobs a day × 5 days = 40 visits a week. At a 12% no-show rate, that's ~5 dead slots a week — 250 a year. At your average ticket (plug in your own — say $275), that's $68,750 in lost revenue annually, before counting drive time and the emergency slots that went to ghosts instead of real emergencies. Cut it to 4% with the filter above: you recover ~165 slots. The confirm-or-cancel text costs fractions of a cent. There is no higher-ROI text in plumbing.
Appointment confirmations are transactional texts (about an existing appointment) — the lowest-risk texting there is. You still need 10DLC business-texting registration (application-to-person 10-digit long code — the carrier system for business texting) before sending: 1–7 day approval, ~$15–$20 in fees. Include opt-out language in automated texts, and observe TCPA (federal telemarketing law) quiet hours (no texts before 8am or after 9pm recipient local time) — schedule the morning-of texts inside that window.
